Angle Grinder Selection and Safety FAQ
What size angle grinder is best for home DIY projects?
For most residential tasks, a 4.5-inch (115mm) angle grinder is the ideal choice. This size offers the best balance of power and maneuverability for common jobs like removing rust, cutting rebar, or sharpening lawnmower blades. It is lightweight enough for extended use while accommodating a wide variety of affordable, standard-sized discs.
Can I use a wood cutting blade on an angle grinder?
Using a traditional toothed circular saw blade on an angle grinder is extremely dangerous and not recommended. Angle grinders operate at much higher RPMs than circular saws, which can cause wood blades to kick back or shatter. If you must cut wood, only use specialized tungsten carbide grit discs specifically engineered for high-speed grinder compatibility.
What is the difference between a brushed and brushless motor?
Brushless motors are more efficient, generate less heat, and provide a longer tool lifespan because they eliminate the friction caused by carbon brushes. While brushed motors are more budget-friendly, brushless models offer superior battery life for cordless grinders and require significantly less maintenance over time.
How do I choose the right disc for my project?
Disc selection depends entirely on the material and the desired finish. Use abrasive wheels for grinding metal, diamond-tipped blades for masonry and tile, and flap discs for sanding or finishing surfaces. Always ensure the disc's maximum RPM rating exceeds the no-load speed of your grinder to prevent structural failure of the accessory.
What safety gear is mandatory when operating a grinder?
At a minimum, you must wear impact-resistant safety glasses or a full-face shield, as grinders produce high-velocity sparks and debris. Additionally, use hearing protection, heavy-duty gloves, and a dust mask. Never remove the adjustable safety guard provided with the tool, as it is your primary defense against disc fragments in the event of a breakage.
