Impact Driver Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an impact driver and a cordless drill?

While both tools rotate, an impact driver uses a specialized internal strike mechanism that provides rapid rotational bursts (concussion) to drive long screws into dense materials without stripping. A standard drill provides constant torque and is better suited for drilling precision holes and driving small fasteners.

Can you use regular drill bits in an impact driver?

Standard round-shank drill bits will not fit in an impact driver because it uses a 1/4-inch hex quick-release collet. To drill holes, you must use "impact-rated" hex-shank bits designed to withstand the high torque and concussive forces of the tool.

What are the primary benefits of using an impact driver?

The main advantages include significantly higher torque output, reduced user fatigue because the tool does the work of turning, and a lower risk of "cam-out" (the bit slipping out of the screw head). They are also typically more compact and lightweight than traditional hammer drills.

Is an impact driver too powerful for small projects?

Impact drivers can be overpowered for delicate tasks like assembling flat-pack furniture or working with softwoods. However, most modern models feature variable speed triggers or multiple torque settings that allow you to dial down the power for more sensitive applications.

Do I need a brushless motor for my impact driver?

While brushed motors are more affordable, brushless motors are highly recommended for impact drivers. Brushless technology offers better battery efficiency, a longer tool lifespan, and more power in a smaller frame because it generates less friction and heat during operation.
