A standard orbital sander moves in small circular patterns and uses square sheets, making it ideal for getting into corners. A random orbital sander rotates while simultaneously oscillating in an elliptical manner, which prevents swirl marks and provides a much smoother finish on flat surfaces.
Which sandpaper grit should I start with for woodworking projects?
The starting grit depends on the wood's condition; for rough-cut lumber or removing old paint, start with 60 or 80 grit. For general smoothing of relatively flat surfaces, 120 grit is the standard starting point before progressing to finer grits like 180 and 220.

You should change the sandpaper as soon as you notice a buildup of wood dust (clogging) or when the abrasive feels smooth to the touch. Using worn sandpaper generates heat rather than cutting wood, which can burn the workpiece and damage the hook-and-loop sanding pad.
